A Different Kind Of Fast Food
If you’ve participated in a Meals From The Heart meal-packing event, you already know how quickly a packing team can turn ingredients into ready-for-the-shelf packaged meals. It’s not uncommon for a team to pack thousands of meals in a single packing session of thirty minutes or so. Multiply that by several teams over multiple sessions, and the numbers (and boxes) stack up to tens of thousands of meals for just a few hours of packing. In short, it doesn’t take much time to do a whole lotta good for local families.
But the need for speed doesn’t stop after the meals are packed.
One of the (many) things that make Meals From The Heart a unique meal-packing organization is the timely impact the meals have on local communities. Almost immediately after the meals are packaged and boxed, they go to local food shelves. Within a day or two, and sometimes even hours, after a packing event, Meals From The Heart rice or pasta meals are available to individuals, families, and senior citizens in our communities.
And Meals From The Heart meals are popular, so they don’t stay on the shelves long. How do we know that? Because the folks at the food shelves tell us. While they are always grateful, we often hear two questions when we deliver the meals: “Can we get more?” and “When can we get more?”
The need for healthy meals for Minnesotans is at an all-time high. If Minnesota food shelves were open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, more than ten people would visit a food shelf every minute! In 2022, Minnesotans made over 5.5 million visits to food shelves, and the numbers for this year are trending even higher.
So, the next time you’re at a Meals From The Heart packing event and see the boxes stack up as the minutes tick by, know that most of those meals will be on pantry shelves and dinner tables within the week.
