5,000 Meals Delivered To Help Our Neighbors In St. Paul’s Midway Area!

With the help of much-needed and appreciated donations, Meals From The Heart teamed up with Open Hands Midway, Inc. to provide 5,000 meals for St. Paul Midway residents. Meals From The Heart provides millions of meals each year to local food shelves through meal-packing events. However, since normal meal-packing events are on hold during the health crisis, we are seeking donations and are working with a small group of staff and volunteers to pack and deliver meals safely. We hope to secure the donations to provide 300,000 meals to help keep local food shelves and organizations like Open Hands Midway, Inc. stocked with healthy, good-tasting meals. Thanks to our generous donors for helping us help our neighbors get through these tough times.

On Friday, April 17, Kay Kuehn, executive director of Open Hands Midway Inc., picked up 5000 meals from Meals From The Heart to help feed their community in St. Paul’s Midway area. The mission of Open Hands Midway is to serve economically challenged people in the St. Paul Midway and surrounding areas. Open Hands Midway helps vulnerable residents obtain nutritious meals, clothing, household goods, groceries, personal supplies, and access to an array of community resources.

Meals From The Heart has been a vital partner of Open Hands Midway Inc. for over six years, caring for the folks living in the Midway community.

Before the current health crisis, Open Hands Midway Inc. served a free dine-in lunch and distributed fresh produce and bakery items. Due to safety protocols during the health crisis, these free services came to an end.

We couldn’t just stop serving the community,” stated Kay Kuehn, Executive Director of Open Hands Midway, Inc., “Especially now that the need has grown exponentially as a result of the Covid-19 crisis. We had to develop a new way to get help to those who need it.”

The first step of their new process will begin on April 28, 2020, with the re-opening of their food shelf. Starting on that Tuesday, pre-packed food boxes will be available for pick-up at the door. These pre-packed boxes will include the Veggies & Rice and Alfredo Primavera meals from Meals From The Heart.

“The plan is to include two packages in each box,” added Kuehn. “Our community members really enjoy these meals and will be excited to see them in their box.” The organization hopes to have about 800 boxes available for pick up. Under normal circumstances, this many boxes would last for about three weeks. With this growing hunger crisis, however, Kuehn expects the food to run out much sooner.

Also, Open Hands Midway, Inc. plans to re-open their Monday lunch service as a “to-go” service on Monday, May 4, 2020, and add an additional “to-go” lunch service on Wednesdays to help meet the growing demand.
