Meals From The Heart

Meals From The Heart helps neighbors AND cares for the environment!

Meals From The Heart brings people together for meal-packing events that provide flavorful, nutritious meals to local food shelves. As the MFTH team likes to say: “We make it easy to make a difference”. BizRecycling enters in the picture with a similar mantra, helping businesses start or improve recycling programs to make a difference by reducing or diverting trash to the landfill.

From the beginning, it was important to Meals From The Heart to share the message to their partners and donors that they not only care for their neighbors that are struggling with food insecurity, but also care for the environment. When Tom Thiets, Founder of Meals From The Heart, reached out to get more information about the BizRecycling program, the team was throwing nearly everything in the trash because there weren’t enough containers.

What: Improved existing recycling program
Why: To share the message to their partners and donors that they not only care for our neighbors that are struggling with food insecurity, but also care for the environment.
How: Recycling bins, tilt trucks and can liners
Results: Diverted approximately 2,862 lbs of cardboard, 735 lbs of plastic film, and 757 lbs of commingled containers from the trash.

Following an on-site meeting and evaluation with a Sustainability Specialist from MN Waste Wise, the proper containers were identified to implement a successful recycling program to reduce the volume of weekly waste. Meals From The Heart applied for the grant and was approved shortly thereafter.

Having the proper containers for waste and recycling provided ease of access and removed any feelings or concerns that recycling takes more time, or is a hassle that wastes time for the Meals From The Heart team. The “availability and awareness [of the recycling program] makes it easier to participate”; and material that “used to get thrown away in the garbage, now gets recycled”, shared Tom. Now they barely fill the trash bins!
